Kitten Tales from Nancy and Colleen

Meet Princess

Princess Deux

Nancy, our Dodge Parts Assistant Manager's daughter, Colleen has an especially mystical tale of kitten acquisition.

When Colleen was five, her babysitter lived on a farm. A particular one of the barn cats, Patchy, took a shining to Colleen. Patchy was a gray cat with a white patch on her chest. Colleen was a little girl with great affection for her feline friends. Patchy was pregnant with her first litter, and when the time came to birth the kittens, she crawled up on Colleen's lap to do so.

Colleen witnessed the miracle of birth and one of those kittens born was given to her in honor of the occasion. She named her kitten Princess and loved to rub Princess' ears. And to this very day, Colleen can put her five-year-old cat to sleep, just by rubbing its ears.

Does anybody else see a future for Colleen as the Cat Whisperer? Colleen herself would prefer to go into Veterinary medicine or do the noble work at a no-kill shelter.

Crab Dip

Hot Crab Dip Recipe

1lb crab meat flaked
2 8oz block cream cheese (softened)
8 oz sour cream
1 tsp dry mustard
1/4 cup mayo
1/2 lemon (juiced) or a couple of tsps from bottled juice
dash worcestershire
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
paprika
salt/pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.

in large bowl combine crab, cream cheese, sour cream, mustard, mayo, lemon juice, worcestershire, salt/pepper, and 1 cup cheddar cheese, reserve paprika and 1/2 cup cheese,

place mix in 2 quart casserole dish, top with cheese and paprika. Bake 40 minutes.

Possible Issue with iPod Interface in Subarus

Please be advised of a possible issue concerning the accessory iPod Interface and the 4th Generation Nano or the 2nd Generation iPod Touch.

Apple, Inc. has changed the charging protocols within these newest products, and as a result, they will not recharge when connected to the iPod Interface. All other functions are still supported by the iPod Interface.

Both the 4th Generation iPod Nano and the 2nd Generation iPod Touch devices will operate properly when connected to the iPod Interface, but they will not recharge.

Subaru is currently developing a new version of the iPod Interface that will include the charging feature for the 4th Generation Nano and the 2nd Generation iPod Touch.

We'll let you know when the updated technology is available.

TDI named Green Car of the year!

What an honor for VW! With so much static out there about hybrid cars and other alternative fuel, it's easy to forget that we already have access to a proven, greener alternative.

This year, the TDI won Guinness Book of World Records' lowest-fuel-consumption award as it averaged an incredible 58.82 MPG accross the US.

"EPA research has concluded that if diesels were to power one third of all light duty vehicles in the United States, the shift would save approximately 1.4 million barrels of oil a day—equal to the daily shipments from Saudi Arabia to the U.S.

The Jetta TDI models come standard with Volkswagen’s Prevent and Preserve Safety System, consisting of numerous standard safety features. Like all 2009 model year Volkswagens, the Jetta TDIs also come standard with Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) for added safety. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the Jetta with their highest safety rating, a Top Safety Pick.

CVM and the American Diabetes Association

Each year, CVM raises thousands of dollars for the American Diabetes Assocation. Our president, Monique, is the Chairperson of the Volunteer Leadership Board. Her father and our founder, Ed, battles diabetes.

This is her story about why she is so involved with the cause, "I started my journey with the ADA because I sold a car to one of their employees. She asked me to get a team to start walking at the annual step-out walk, and my competitive streak took over. I wanted to raise the most money. But having been involved now for 4 years I want to find a cure for all those people fighting this horrible disease. I do this for the great kids I've gotten to know (like Nicky Lavenbery) who fight with this disease everyday just to TRY to live a normal life. I do this for my father who downplayed this disease to protect me; now I see what he has had to struggle with all these years. "

Hot Feta Artichoke Dip

Hot Feta Artichoke Dip (Jane Austin’s recipe)

Ingredients:

*1 can (14 oz.) artichoke hearts, drained & chopped
*8 oz crumbled Feta Cheese (use French feta for a smoother taste)
*1 cup Mayonnaise (You can substitute low fat mayo)
*1/2 cup shredded Parmesan Cheese
*1 jar (2 oz.) diced pimientos well drained*1 clove garlic, minced

MIX all ingredients.

SPOON into 9-inch pie plate or 3-cup shallow baking dish.

BAKE at 350°F for 20 to 25 minutes or until lightly browned. Garnish with chopped tomato and sliced green onion. Serve with assorted crackers, Tostitos or pita triangles. Serves about 4 to 6 people. This recipe puts a different spin on the hot artichoke dip everyone is used to having by adding Feta cheese and pimentos. It is one of my favorite winter hors d’oeuvres, it is creamy and rich, with all those delicious cheese flavors.

I installed the Factory Hitch on my new '08 Outback XT. I went with the factory hitch because it will handle everything I need it to do, and in my opinion it just fits the best. The hitch came with everything needed to install it, including the plug and play wiring harness, draw bar, all bolts & nuts, and even new exhaust gaskets.

Now that I have it installed, I have to say I am really impressed. Compared with the other after-market hitches I have seen installed, the factory hitch is secured at more points, and well, it is just clearly designed for the car.

I started by backing the Outback up onto ramps. This was more than enough room for me to install the hitch:

The first thing you do is remove both mufflers at the flanges:

This is to get access to the heat shields which must be removed to remove weld nut covers:

Once the heat shields are off the center weld nut will be exposed, next remove the forward bolt from the black brace, and repeat on the other side:

Then reinstall the heat shield, you can see the three mounting points now:

One trick in the install for me, was that the "Links" weld nut threads were filled in partially with paint, i used the bolts removed from the black brace to chase the threads:

Since I was installing by myself, I used a 2*8 and my floor jack to lift the hitch into position to start the bolts, note the links loosely installed:

Tighten everything to the specified torque (68 ft lbs if memory serves) It feels like a ton of torque when you are working overhead:

Then re-install the mufflers (they were a lot bigger than I thought they were:

The install was very easy, but my car is brand new and all the bolts came right out. The total job was three hours end to end including the wiring and taking all the pictures. The factory included instructions are very good, at least for factory instructions that is, I found them very clear and easy to use.I think anyone who is comfortable changing oil, and rotating tires etc could do this job.

Hello, my name is Ken Howard. I am a Volkswagen technician at Cumberland Valley Motors. I fly remote control airplanes. RC aviation is a great hobby and has been a passion of mine for 5 years now. You can fly airplanes, helicopters, thermal gliders and even blimps. My choice is RC aerobatic airplanes. I find aerobatics to be fun and challenging. But a lot of people enjoy scale models of full size aircraft. For instance, a model of a P-51 mustang can be bought, built, and flown to replicate the days of World War II. RC jets with real jet turbines scaled down in size are used for flying scale fighter jets such as F-15’s or F-18’s which can travel up to 300mph! Basically, if you can think of a real airplane there’s a model of it.

Not only is flying RC airplanes great fun, but as a mechanic by profession, I find building an airplane to be fun and exciting. I am currently building a plane called an edge 540 it’s an aerobatic aircraft. Its wingspan is 85 inches, it uses a 8.5 horsepower 2 stroke gasoline engine and swings a 24 inch propeller. I do not build my airframes, though kits are available if I wanted to. I buy pre-built airframes and install the control surfaces, engine, and radio equipment. These kits are called ARF’s or Almost Ready to Fly kits. ARF kits still require a great deal of thought, craftsmanship and a good understanding of airplane physics, but many people do not enjoy building planes, so ready to fly planes are also produced. Most RTF planes are small electric planes which can be flown at a local park or baseball field, just charge the battery and fly.

There are three basic flight controls of an airplane. The first is aileron, which rolls the aircraft elevator, which in turn pitches the aircraft’s nose up and down. The second is the rudder which yaws the aircraft from side to side. The third is throttle which controls engine’s speed or rotations per minute (RPM). All the flight controls are inputted to the transmitter by the pilot whose radio frequency is picked up by the receiver in the airplane. From the receiver, a battery pack in the airplane powers a small servo motor which is actuated and linked to the desired control surface. For example, if your airplane is full speed (throttle) down the runway and you pull back on the elevator stick on your transmitter; the receiver reads that input and signals the elevator control surface to pitch the nose upwards, which causes the airplane’s lift-off.

Model airplanes are powered by electric motors, glow fuel engines, gasoline engines, and turbines. For smaller park fly airplanes, electric motors are used. Glow engines are for slightly larger airplanes typically 30 to 60 inch wingspan. The engine I use is a 58cc engine with electronic ignition, so it starts with just a couple of flips of the propeller. These engines are used for airplanes with the wingspan of 70 to 140 inches. Turbine engines are also used for some applications. They are actual scaled-down turbines just like the military and commercial jets use. And like their full-scale turbine counterparts, they are very sophisticated with control modules and temperature sensors. Kerosene is used to fuel them, and wow do they sound great.

Many people ask how to get started in this great hobby. The best thing to do is to find a flying club in your area and talk with members of that club. Most clubs have flight instructors like myself, to make suggestions on which plane is good for a student to start out with, as well as train them to correctly and safely fly their RC airplane. This is a great hobby, but unfortunately the hobby is slowly fading out. Today’s young people are choosing to spend warm sunny days inside playing video games, instead of spending a day outside at the airfield. For this reason I encourage anyone, young and old to get involved with this hobby. Who knows? Maybe someday this hobby will bring you a dream of flying a full scale airplane, like it has for me. Monique's Famous Chocolate Mousse

Monique’s Famous chocolate mousse

Ingredients:
8 ounces semisweet chocolate
4 ounces unsweetened chocolate
3/4 cup unsalted butter
5 eggs, separated
3 tablespoons Grand Marnier or Tuaca
Pinch of cream of tartar
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup heavy cream

1. To make mousse, melt the chocolate and butter in a double boiler over simmering water until smooth.
2. Beat the egg yolks in a large bowl and add the chocolate butter mixture. Stir in the liqueur.
3. Beat the egg whites with cream of tartar to a soft peak and add the sugar gradually. Continue to beat until stiff. Whisk a third of the whites into the chocolate mixture and fold in the rest.
4. Whip the cream and fold it into the mousse. It is important that you do not get impatient and stir at this point. By continuing to gently fold the mousse together you will ensure its fluffy texture. Refrigerate until firm, at least one hour.
5. To serve spoon the chilled mouse in irregular dollops into a chocolate bowl or individual bowls. To garnish arrange chocolate curls on top.

This simple, elegant delicious crowd pleaser is really simple to make. Don’t let the egg whites scare you into thinking this is difficult. It’s a snap, especially if you have a Kitchen Aid mixer. Plus how many yummy chocolate desserts can you make in less than an hour? Serves at least eight friends or family and makes you look like a world famous chef!

Chunky Tomato Lasagne

Monique’s Spinach & Chunky Tomato Lasagna

Ingredients:
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella
25-28 oz ricotta cheese
3/4 cup parmesan freshly grated
1 egg slightly beaten
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
2-3 large balls of fresh mozzarella
1 package spinach lasagna noodles
Sauce ingredients:
1/2 cup finely chopped onions
3 cloves garlic thinly sliced and halved
1/4 cup red wine
1 tablespoon olive oil
4 lbs ripe large or plum tomatoes seeded and diced (or you can buy them canned)
Fresh basil

1. Heat oil in pan at medium high heat, add onion & garlic stirring constantly 2-3 minutes, then deglaze with red wine.
2. Add tomatoes, fresh basil, salt, pepper & thyme. Let simmer 1/2 hour.
Take hand held Cusinart and pulverize but leave sauce chunky. Simmer for an additional 1/2 hour.
3. To assemble: Cook noodles to package directions, strain and rinse with cold water to separate. Take a 13x9 pan and spray with Pam. Put 1 1/2 to 2 cups sauce then layer noodles, 1 cup cheese mixture ( first 7 ingredients), 1 cup sauce, tear fresh basil & mozzarella and scatter, then repeat twice. Add 1 layer of noodles, remainder of sauce, slices of fresh mozzarella, freshly grated parmesan cheese and pop it in the oven. Bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees. Let stand at least 20 minutes before serving.
